A Full Synopsis
What was the War of the Best? Why did the War of the Best begin after the Ethereal Wizard Taddeum Kling passed away, the only magical human being that ever lived on Earth?
In this adult fiction intergalactic medieval sci-fi fantasy novel covering the conclusion to the century-long war known as the War of the Best, we follow the Lucent of the Round, Lucent Yudell Eshclep, the wielder of the Warpbringer Longswords, eight magically enchanted longswords stored in four scabbards, working in essential roles as the War of the Best comes to an end.
The biggest and most important moments of how the War of the Best began and ended happen during this novel, and Lucent Yudell Eshclep is consistently at the centre of most of them. While the majority of The Plight of Midnight takes place in the medieval European sci-fi fantasy setting of Volthun, based upon Great Britain, a sizeable amount of the novel also seamlessly takes place in the medieval African sci-fi fantasy setting of Sandatosia, based upon Igboland, and the medieval Asian sci-fi fantasy setting of Zaranova, based upon Japan, incorporating unique forms of dialogue, British-inspired, Igbo-inspired, and Japanese-inspired cultural environments, and essential plotlines to the concluding War of the Best.
The story can get very medieval with vivid horror elements, but it can also be extraordinarily humorous in certain moments, creating an all-encompassing, rich adult fiction intergalactic medieval sci-fi fantasy novel that reads in an incredibly exhilarating capacity.
The Plight of Midnight is Peter Azuogu’s debut novel, and is the adult fiction intergalactic medieval sci-fi fantasy novel detailing the full conclusion to the century-long War of the Best. Written in the tradition of World War II Centennial Remembrance, The Plight of Midnight is the very first story of its kind and involves all aspects of the science fiction and fantasy genres while incorporating authentically diverse storytelling like never before.

The Battle of Osemont
Once Ethereal Knight Squad E-17 finished off the Shadowless Demons in their area with the help of Lucent Zeph Gatwick, Lucent Zeph Gatwick congratulated Ethereal Knight Kaelen Thorn on his squad's good work.
“The Ethereal Wizard himself would be very proud of how you and your men defeated those Shadowless Demons, Kaelen,” complimented Lucent Zeph Gatwick.
“Magnificent Lucent, you are the only reason we’re still alive! If you hadn’t shown up at such a critical moment, we’d all have been killed or, Kling forbid, turned into prisoners of war for the Guild of Judgement,” emphasised Ethereal Knight Kaelen Thorn.
“Let’s all just be glad that we kept the casualties to a minimum–,” said Lucent Zeph Gatwick before rapidly turning around to unsheathe his Cloudpiercer Longsword and swing out a Cloud Slash, a powerful wind projectile that intercepted an oncoming fast missile from the opposite direction. It was composed of Black Flames, the hottest kind of flame that could be produced.
As an explosion ensued mid-air from the collision of the projectiles, the aftermath left patches of burning Black Flames on the ground and surrounding buildings. Walking ominously through these patches of burning Black Flames was the wielder of the magically enchanted weapon called the Screechingcinder Longsword, the Master of Judgement called Master Slade, a fair-skinned, black-haired young white man, wearing steel full-body armour. Master Slade’s Screechingcinder Longsword was notorious for not just its devastating, destructive power but also its screeching sound whenever Black Flames were conjured, a distressing sound that hissed and hymned like a banshee screaming in pain. Upon his sighting of Master Slade and the screeching sound of the Master of Judgement’s Screechingcinder Longsword, Lucent Zeph Gatwick urgently commanded Ethereal Knight Squad E-17 to retreat.
“Squad E-17, I command you to retreat as far away from here as you can! Warn the other squads to do the same if you run into any whilst fleeing! This enemy is too strong for you to be within its proximity,” loudly commanded Lucent Zeph Gatwick to Ethereal Knight Squad E-17.
“You heard your beloved Lucent! Squad E-17, retreat immediately,” shouted Ethereal Knight Kaelen Thorn after blowing his whistle again to Ethereal Knight Squad E-17, prompting them all to retreat from Master Slade.
Witnessing the fleeing Ethereal Knights made Master Slade giggle menacingly.
“My dearest Zeph, why lie to your frail comrades? You should know well enough that they won’t run fast enough to escape my blade,” taunted Master Slade.
“You’ve saved me the trouble of finding you, vile pagan! I will slay you for good this time, Slade, abhorrent traitor,” Lucent Zeph Gatwick threatened, to which Master Slade gave an ominous, dismissive giggle.
“What spunk you always exude, old chum! After I decorate the ground with the entrails of a Lucent, I’ll see if your frail fleeing comrades have as much spunk as you,” replied Master Slade before performing a Cinder Rush, rocket boosting himself with propulsive Black Flames that speedily shot him in the direction of Lucent Zeph Gatwick to deliver a point-blank Cinder Slash.
Simultaneously, as Master Slade performed his Cinder Rush, Lucent Zeph Gatwick performed a Cloud Blitz, powerfully propelling himself with strong winds towards Master Slade to deliver a point-blank Cloud Slash. The wielders of these magically enchanted weapons clashed formidably, maintaining their propulsion even after colliding, continuously discharging gigantic shockwaves through the entire surrounding area, leaving a large crater in the ground where they collided, and leveling all encompassing buildings to rubble. Upon closer inspection of Lucent Zeph Gatwick’s and Master Slade’s collision, their magically enchanted weapons were not even physically touching, as Lucent Zeph Gatwick coated his Cloudpiercer Longsword with winds that consistently deflected Master Slade’s Screechingcinder Longsword, which was coated with Black Flames.
Realm of Cosmic Peak
Flying through the daytime skies above the Celestial Commons of Cosmic Peak, the vast area where most Cos Citizens live and go about their days, Lady Talia Rexes and Lucent Nevly Wentrill rode on the backs of Astral Dragons through the Realm of Cosmic Peak until they landed near a statue of Lady Talia Rexes’ great-grandfather, Lord Enver Rexes, the founder of the Realm of Cosmic Peak. They both dismounted from their Astral Dragons to admire the statue of Lady Talia Rexes’ great-grandfather whilst petting the heads of their Astral Dragons.
“Forgive me for being ignorant, My Lady, but do Astral Dragons have long lifespans?” inquired Lucent Nevly Wentrill as he petted the head of the Astral Dragon he rode atop.
“They do. Their life spans are twice that of the average human, and their intelligence is second only to humans. We don’t understand everything about Fogoth’s magically enchanted weapon, Shadowkeeper, but we found out a few important things over the last century. One of these Shadowkeeper attributes is that it can only take the shadows of humans and dragons. We assume this has to do with the intelligence of a living creature,” explained Lady Talia Rexes as she petted the Astral Dragon’s head she was riding.
“That makes sense. We’ve never seen shadowless animals or shadowless plant life. Kling’s blessings for it. So many Astral Dragons have been going missing recently, damn that Fogoth for hijacking these special creatures for his nefarious purposes! We shall crush him and his traitorous ilk soon. Fregit here never did anything to the pagan,” replied Lucent Nevly Wentrill as he petted the head of Fregit.
“Same with Sazun. They are precious and need to be protected from what’s to come,” said Lady Talia Rexes as she petted Sazun’s head.
The fate of Volthun and the legacies of the Warpbringer Longswords converge. Enter the high-stakes conflict that intertwines the mythic past with the resolution of the present.
